The New Jail Located

The Site was Staked Out Today

Shade Trees Cut Down to Make Way for the New Building.

["Ottawa Weekly Republic," 24 May 1906, p1c3]
The location for the new county jail was staked off today under the direction of the county commissioners, after many of the leading citizens of Ottawa had volunteered their advice on the matter.

When the site was finally selected the work of chopping down half a dozen shade trees, which were in the way, began.  Just as soon as the stonework of the old building is torn down work on the foundation of the new structure will begin.

the front of the new jail will be 104 feet back from Main street.  The courthouse on the south is 100 feet back.  The north walk of the jail will be 70 feet south of Third street and there will be 122 feet between the jail and courthouse.  The ground space the jail will occupy is 32 by 94 feet.

The contract for the heating plant of the new jail has not been let.  The commissioners announced today that the letting will be deferred for a while.  A. P. Elder's bid was the lowest of those filed and he will probably get the contract.
