Iva Jane Houston, 85, Ottawa, died Monday, Jan. 30, 2006, at Village Manor Nursing Home, Ottawa. Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Dengel & Son Mortuary, Ottawa. She was born April 9, 1920, at Menlo to Marlon Walter and Mary Eliza (Drinnen) Houston. She grew up in Menlo until the age of 10, when her family moved to the family farm in western Franklin County. She had resided in the Appanoose area since. She attended rural grade schools and graduated from Appanoose High School in 1938. She also attended Ottawa University. She worked on the family farm until 1960 and from then until her retirement worked as a housekeeper and caregiver. She was a member of Appanoose Baptist Church. Survivors include a sister, Lois Mae Chester, Fairview; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by brothers, Alvin "Bud" Francis Houston, Raymond Arthur "Cot" Houston, Carl Wallace Houston and William Marion "Bill" Houston; and a sister, Minnie Hazelton Barber. Friends may pay their respects after 5 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, where the family will meet with friends from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday. Burial will be in Dean Cemetery, Franklin County. Memorial contributions may be made to the Iva Jane Houston Memorial Fund in care of Dengel & Son Mortuary, 235 S. Hickory St., Ottawa KS 66067.
