Lead and Zinc in the Hills?

A Strong Probability that Mineral Wealth Abounds West of Ottawa -

Prospecting in Progress - Lands Being Leased.

["Ottawa Weekly Herald," 14 Sep 1899]

The Chippewa hills and the country adjacent are the center of considerable interest at present. People whose experience in such matters should enable them to know whereof they speak, state that there is an abundance of lead and zinc in the hills, and some of these same people have already leased land and begun prospecting. Messrs. Frank Peterson, J. C. Barrickman and M. Fredeen have secured a lease on land owned by William Marks, near the Chippewa reserve, and are sinking a shaft. They believe they will find mineral.

Mr. Louis Jack, lately from Colorado, who has had years of experience in mining, has satisfied himself, from surface indications, that lead and zinc may be found west of the city, and will, it is said, form a company here to lease land and begin prospecting. He will carry on his work some distance south of the claim now held by the other Ottawa company.

The belief that the much desired ore may be found hereabouts does not arise as a result of any craze in mining business, but is the outgrowth of investigations which have been in progress for some time. Local men have frequently secured good samples of lead and zinc ore from territory immediately surrounding Ottawa.
