STRANGE COINCIDENCE
A Wild Eagle Witnesses The Placing
It's
Counterpart On Forest Park Gate.
["Ottawa Daily Republican," September 15, 1899, page 3, column 4]
This morning workmen were engaged in placing the great metal eagle that is to surmount the entrance to Forest Park gate, in its place on one of the pillars. A large number of people gathered to witness the interesting operation, and they were edified by a most remarkable and almost inexplicable coincidence.
As the huge figure, which is a wonderously perfect imitation of our proud bird of freedom, was being moved to position, many in the crowd noticed a great bird approaching slowly from the north-west, in a direct line for the park, and as they eyed it curiously it reached a point almost precisely over the gate, and then stopped and hovered, as if in curiosity, at the exact moment when the great metal image of itself slipped into place. It was a magnificent specimen of the great American eagle, seen rarely enough here, and its opportune appearance, and peculiarity of action had a most startling effect.
Many people in the crowd cried aloud in excitement, whereat the big aerial sponsor of the occasion started anew on its flight, and soon disappeared in the south-east.
