Dean Cemetery's Name Sake.
Daniel Dean a former well known resident of Appanoose township and one of the first settlers of Franklin county died at his home in Severy last Friday afternoon. The funeral was held at the home in Severy Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Daniel Dean was born in Harrison county, Indiana, September 23, 1830, and was reared on a farm. He was lured to California with the rush of propsectors in 1849. In 1850 he engaged in the mercantile business. He came to this county in 1857 and pre-empted 160 acres in Appanoose Township. From 1866 to 1868 he was justice of the peace of Appanoose township. Mr. Dean moved from his farm to Ottawa in 1882 and engaged in the mercantile business. Ben Sands of Ottawa was a business partner of Mr. Dean for several years. About seventeen years ago Mr. Dean went to Idaho and spent thirteen years. He was prospecting there in the hills. For the past four years, the Dean family has lived at Severy. Mr. Dean married Nancy A. Avery in Palmyra, Indiana, in 1850. The wife and five children survive the deceased. They are W. R. Dean of Ottawa, John Dean of Oswego, James Dean of Severy, Thomas Dean who lives in Arizona, and Miss Mary Dean who made her home with her parents. Mr. Dean was a veteran of the Civil War and served an enlistment of three months with Company A, Tenth Kansas infantry. |
