Last Deer Killed Here.
The fact that Franklin county sportsmen are now satisfied to bring in a few rabbits and squirrels from the local hunting grounds which used to furnish big game, recalls the fact that former Sheriff S. P. Costigan shot the last deer killed in Franklin county. That was in 1888 and Mr. Costigan shot the animal within a mile of the present northern city limits, on the Sallee farm. His brother Walter J. Costigan was with him and got the first shot at the deer, putting two buckshot into it. S. P. Costigan had a repeating rifle, finally striking the deer as it was in the act of jumping a fence. The animal, which was a buck, ran a mile before it dropped. Mr. Costigan brough the deer to the city, cut it up and gave all his friends a steak or roas or cutlet. |
