A Visit to LeLoup
[Ottawa Newspaper, 30 Aug 1889, page 1] Seven miles north east of Ottawa on the Santa Fe is the little village of LeLoup. It is not a pretentious place yet for its size and proximity to larger places it has a considerable share of business. There are two regular stores. Mr. Gilkey, the post master, lately of Baldwin is the proprietor of one and Mr. Noss of the other. Mr. Noss is having a set of wagon scales put in front of his store. This is the home of Mr. Fergason an ex-official of various offices, and dealer in outside business such as live stock, coal and grain. J. G. Thomson is one of the residents of the hamlet and a well informed man. We met Mr. Young, a jocular old farmer who says he lives inside of the city limits. Mr. Ard, the agent will soon go to Seward, Oklahoma at a salary of $65 per month. He bids eternal farewell to Franklin county. Mr. Fulwider another citizen is going to return to Montgomery county, Ind., his old home. We had the pleasure of meeting Rev. Gillhan, a Methodist minister, now supplying two points and also running a blacksmith shop. Mr. Gillhan is a pleasant gentlemen and will be a TRIBUNE reader in the future as well as a large number of others. Our stay was so brief we could not extend our trip to the country, but as we will be there again soon we hope to meet many others. |
