"Mr. H. T. Stith addressed the farmers at Pomona at Parkinson Hall (J. H. Parkinson having kindly tendered the hall for that purpose free of charge) on Tuesday evening last only a few hours previous notice being given. About 50 were out. Mr. Stith explained the object of the FMBA and said the Alliance and they are working for same object, viz: to benefit the farmer. The FMBA however receives no members except farmers over 21 years of age. While it is very agreeable to have lady associates, it was deemed unadvisable to admit them. The men had done the voting that has produced present conditions and they are the ones to furnish relief. The time for heroic action had come and something has to be done or the farmer cannot do business. Everybody even the farmers themselves look upon farming with contempt. Yet farming is the basis of nearly all our wealth and should not only be considered honorable but should also receive a fair proportion of the wealth it creates, which it does not now do.
Mr. Stith's remarks were well received and a lodge of 11 charter members was organized which will undoubtedly receive many accesssions in the near future. The following officers were elected, viz: Chas. Vickers, President; T. K. Miller, Vice President; Jas. Moore, Secretary; W. E. Martin, Treasurer; D. Burris, Chaplain; A. Bowman, Sentinel."

"The first meeting of the Women's Christian Temperance
Union of Pomona was held Tuesday afternoon. The meeting was
characterized by intense earnestness and a strong desire on the
part of every member, to gain as soon as possible the knowledge
that is to make the week strong to battle against the enemies
they have undertaken to conquer.
This Union has not taken up five of the fourty departments which
the WCTU embraces. It may look as if that is so small a beginning
as to be worthless but all must remember that 'tall oaks from
little acorns grow,' and that this is not the only Union in the
state, but that many are doing a little work, so by the scotch
proverb- 'many mickles make a muckle.' - we shall accomplish a
great deal.
The Pomona Union now consists of 13 regular members, and one
honorary. The officers are: Belle P. Whetstone, President; Kate
Armstrong, Rec. Secretary; Clara Parker, Cor. Secretary; Ida
McCord, Treasurer; Jennie Garrison, Juvenile; Abbie Newcomb,
Legislative & Petition; Kate Armstrong, Evangelist; Jesse
Maxey, Press & Literature; Belle Whetstone, Sunday School.
The Union cordially invites all ladies and gentlemen to attend
the meetings whether they are inclined to take up the work or
not. The meetings will be held every two weeks; the next one to
be at Mrs. Clara Parker's on May 8th."

"Our committee on investigation met the trustees of the M.E. Church April 27, and made an offer of one hundred and fifty dollars for their old building, which was accepted by the board, ratified by Quarterly Conference, and notice has been sent that they were ready to turn the building over to us. At our last meeting, June 7, it was moved and carried that we accept the building July 2. We had in mind to secure a more convenient location where the plan of work in view might be more successfully carried out, but for fear of incurring too heavy a debt at present and on account of a generous donation in favor of present site we almost decided to leave the house where it stands, at least until we have paid for it and experimented as to location. Our reasons for desiring a more central location were, to secure a better attendance at any special meeting, and the establishing of a reading room to accommodate our friends here and from the country who felt disposed to spend a quiet hour in resting the body and improving the mind."

When the engineer felt the bridge giving way he detached the engine from the train and got across without accident and the caboose and several cars of cattle were stopped by those ahead and were not damaged. Several of the cars were new and were built with all the modern facilities for feeding and watering stock. The wreck occurred Friday morning and the bridge was rebuilt and everything cleared up by Monday morning, the men working night and day."
