"SANTA FE WRECK! - Five Coaches Loaded With Passengers Turned Over in Twenty Feet of Water. The second section of No. 5 Santa Fe passenger was wrecked here yesterday afternoon at about 3 o'clock. The train was one of the main line through California trains and had been routed over this line on account of a washout near Topeka. When it reached here the water was higher than was ever known before but the train crew evidently thought that they could pull through but when about a half mile from the depot the track gave away and five of the coaches were overturned, three of them being nearly submerged. The passengers crawled through the windows and got on top of the cars from which position they were rescued in boats.

At the present time one life is all that is known to be lost, that of the four year old daughter of Mrs. Carrie Rhodes, of Chicago. The child was taken out of the car window but fell off of the top of the car and was drowned. The body has not been recovered and the mother is prostrated with grief at the home of H.A. Harrah on East A street. Mrs Rhodes was enroute to Oklahoma to visit her mother. Several of the passengers were slightly injured and a great many lost everything they had with them except what they had on.

Our citizens formed rescue parties as fast as possible but there was only one available boat at the time and this was sent out in charge of Bert Hughes and Elza McFadden who did heroic work in taking passengers to shore. Several rafts were made and run out but they proved unmanageable and most of the rescue parties on them had to spend the night in trees from which they were rescued this morning. A relief train came out from Ottawa with what boats they could get who also did all they could to help. Every available place in town was thrown open for the accommodation of the sufferers and everything possible done to make them comfortable.

Dr. Johnson, E.G. Swayze and Frank Stevens went to the Hale crossing a mile east of town and waded out to the wreck in order to render as much help as possible.

Abe Hart's barn 3 1/2 miles east of town struck by lightning, burned.

Hill body found lodged in a wire fence 1 1/2 miles west of town (flood) Ottawa, drowned.

"GEORGIA RHODES FOUND- A large number of the Odd Fellows and others turned out Tuesday morning and worked all day in hunting for the little four-year old child of Mr. and Mrs. George Rhodes, which was drowned in last Wednesday's wreck. After working all day their labors were rewarded by finding the body in a pile of drift wood about three fourths of a mile below where the accident occurred. The body was brought to the Dyer undertaking room and placed in a metallic casket and the childs parents and grandmother left last night for Wynewood, Oklahoma, where the body will be buried. Mr. and Mrs. Rhodes have the sympathy of the entire city. Owing to the first flood being followed so soon by the second no systematic search could be conducted before and the body had remained in the water nearly a week.

Mr. Rhodes is an engineer for the national White Lead Co. of Chicago.

"Topeka July 18, 1909 Hon. J. E. Reed, Mayor, Pomona, Kansas.

My Dear Sir,

Our officers, employees, patrons and others have told me of the very great help and assistance given by Pomona to the railroad company and passengers that were carried on the unfortunate train that was in the flood at your place.

The good people of Pomona performed a service to the public, as well as to this company, that cannot be over estimated, as it is known that many hazards were taken by the people in an effort to aid those in distress and every possible resource was made use of. While I have said this cannot be overestimated, I would like to have you and your people understand how fully it is appreciated by the management of this company and I know by all interested.

I have directed that the officers of this company reimburse the people of your vicinity as per previous arrangements and to your entire satisfaction, and in addition thereto will be glad to have you know and to have your people know of our appreciation. I am extending you the sincere thanks of the company and of the writer.

Yours Truly,

Mr. Hidinger informed the county commissioners that he should recommend a survey of the stream and expressed the opinion that the government would act promptly in the matter.

In his opinion what the stream needs is a widening of the banks and the removal of anchored snags.

He does not think that it will be necessary to build levees. Whether the stream should be straightened would be a matter of detail that falls to the province of the engineers to follow him he says."

Rice's corn crib was scattered over the farm, apple, peach, and other trees torn up by the roots and twisted off and hay stacks and corn shocks were blown over and scattered in every direction. Several persons in this city watched the storm which formed in a genuine funnel shaped cloud nearly west of town.
