"COMMITS SUICIDE - Our little city was shocked Tuesday morning by the sad news that Truman E. Burrows one of our most respected and industrious young farmers had committed suicide by hanging himself at his home one and a half miles west of town sometime Monday afternoon.

The body was found by his father-in-law, O.F. Meyer, and brother-in-law, Walter Meyer at about 9:30 o'clock Monday night and life had evidently been extinct several hours. Mr. Burrows had been employed for the summer by Mr. M.V. Price of this city and had but recently moved to Mr. Price's farm west of town. Monday morning Mr. Price went out to the farm and with the aid of Burrows tied and removed several calves to the Santa Fe depot using a new rope which Burrows later used in his desperate act. He seemed cheerful and in his usual spirits and after dinner hitched up his horse to the buggy for his wife and little boy to drive to town and spend the afternoon with her mother. He was to go to work chopping in the timber and told her that after doing up the chores he would walk into town in time for supper and accompany them back home.

He did not arrive as planned and after waiting several hours the family became alarmed and Mr. Meyer and son, Walter, went out with lanterns to investigate. They first went to the barn thinking that perhaps he had been kicked by a horse. They found that the chores had not been done up. They went to the house which they had found locked from the inside. Obtaining an ax they pried up a window and entered the room. In the northwest room they found the dead body of Mr. Burrows.

It was suspended from the ceiling by the rope used by him and Mr. Price in the morning. He had placed a stick of stove wood across a shuttle hole in the ceiling to which he had fastened the rope, climbing upon a stool chair he adjusted the rope about his neck and then threw his body forward in such a manner that the weight of the body was thrown upon the rope. His feet were still upon the stool and the knees were bent so as to make strangulation sure.

Assuring themselves that life was unquestionable extinct they notified neighbors and information was sent to Coroner E.V. Lawrence and Sheriff Nick Johnson. The officers reached the scene about 11 o'clock and took charge of the body. The act was probably committed under stress of temporary insanity as there was no cause for the desperate act. He was born in Greenwood township and had lived near Pomona nearly all of his life, and was one of our most respected young men having no bad habits and all of his affairs were in a prosperous condition and his family ties the most pleasant. He was 27 years of age and leaves a wife and one son about 5 years of age.

The funeral was conducted by Rev. Lewis Weary from the M.E. church this morning at 1 o'clock. Burial was in the Greenwood cemetery."

"The Santa Fe section house was burned down Monday afternoon. The fire was first discovered at about 1 o'clock by the local freight crew who supposed they put it out but there must have been some fire left that they failed to find and at about 4:30 the building was again discovered in flames which had gathered such headway that the building could not be saved. There were two Mexicans living in the house and it is thought that when they went to work they left a lantern burning which got knocked down in some way and set the floor on fire."

"SHALL THE UNITED STATES BUILD HIGHWAYS? It is a question which is slowly but surely forcing itself upon the National Legislature. Many Senators and Representatives now believe that the building a system of National Highways is of more economic importance than any other public work--more vital than the question of a large navy more useful than any river or harbor improvement, more necessary than the Panama Canal. For Highways are built and owned by the people and are free to the people. A few years ago, road bills had short shift in Congress-- at present there are nearly a hundred bills before Congress dealing with road building in one form or another.

Although the "good roads" idea has been gathering force and headway for many years, its advocates are still pulling in many directions. Some road associations want State Highways with National aid. Others want good roads paid for by the counties through which they pass, without any aid. One, at least believes firmly that the question is not only one for States, Counties, Cities, and Towns, but for the Nation.

The National Highways Association believes that the beginning of a comprehensive good road system for the nation must be made by the Federal Government.

Such a system--as outlined on the map published here--consists of fifty thousand miles of National Highways. It is not intended that this map should represent the entire good road system needs by the United States. It is merely a tentative suggestion of good roads built by States, by Counties, by Cities and Towns, would grow and multiply.
