TO VOTE FOR LIGHT. "A proposition to vote bonds for electric light services will be submitted to the qualified voters of Pomona at the city election on Monday April 5. The proposition is to construct and equip an electric line from Ottawa and over the city street for lighting the streets and residence.

An engineers estimate places the probable cost at a little less the $14,000. This will provide eleven miles of line between the two cities and equipment for 200 residences, 25 street lamps, 200 meters, all of first class, single phase, 6,600 volt transmission.

Two routes are under consideration, one to follow Seventh street eleven miles long and the other to follow the Missouri Pacific road to H.U. tower, and thence west to the section line, the distance from Ottawa being nine miles. The fact, that Seventh street is now occupied by telephone lines, on each side, may be a deciding point in the final conclusion as to a route.

There is pressure along the line for each route. Many farmers on both proposed lines are desirous of connecting with their service. There are proposals from farmers living two miles form either line. The matter of a route will be decided by the city council after the election, should the proposition carry. The city will construct the line and operate it selling the 'juice' to patrons."

THE ELECTRIC BONDS. "In another column of this issue of the Republican will be found an ordinance and a call for an election for the purpose of voting bonds to the amount of twelve thousand dollars for the purpose of procuring and maintaining electric lights for the city and its inhabitants.

The proposition is for the city to construct and own a line from here to Ottawa and wire the town, Ottawa to furnish the electric current to the city at a much lower price than they would if they built the line to the city limits, the city will then sell to the consumer at a rate slightly in advance of the Ottawa price.

This city actually needs electric service and while some may prefer the city owning and operating its own plant, the plan now proposed looks to us as being the cheapest and best ever offered.

The fact is that none of the small towns that are operating their own plants are giving satisfactory service. They tell us that they can not operate the plant and sell the 'juice' to consumers for less than from 14 to 20 cents per kilowatt which makes it far too expensive for the average family to take the service. By the proposed plan it will be furnished to the consumer at less than 10 cents per kilowatt.

Some may object to the city going into debt at this time, but we must remember that if we would have the city get out of this everlasting rut, if we would have it stand on a par with other towns, if we would make it a pleasant place for the farmers and others to come to, we cannot do it by being afraid of a little debt. Then again, the time to go after a good thing is to go when you can get it, regardless of the times.

SCHOOL HOUSE BURNED. "The Greenwood school house, two miles east and three miles south of this city was totally destroyed by fire about 1 o'clock last Friday afternoon. Most of the children were out at the time and no one was injured. Practically all of the contents were burned, very little equipment being saved.

The Greenwood building was a two room structure equipped with a furnace and an over heated furnace is supposed to have been the cause of the fire.

Sparks and fire brands fell across the road, endangering the Greenwood church but children and others guarded the church extinguishing several small bursts of flame. That building was not injured. The children of the school were practicing for a Christmas program in the church when the fire was discovered.

The Greenwood teachers are H. Edgar Williams of Lane and Miss Mary Davis of the Greenwood neighborhood. The members of the school board are: W. Reed, director; M.B. Whitiker, clerk; M.J. Rabel, treasurer.

The buildings and contents was insured in the Franklin County Mutual for $1,700 and the loss had been settled for $1,675. Arrangements have been made to continue the school in the church building until other arrangements can be made."
