12 Jan "Ben Schofield, 82 years old, brother of Mrs. A. J. Johnson and uncle of Dr. H. B. Johnson, met with a peculiar accident Saturday afternoon. He has been making his home with niece, Mrs. Clarence Reed at Greenwood, chopping wood and doing other odd jobs about the farm. Saturday afternoon he went to the timber to cut wood along the river bank. He was chopping off a log and it gave away sooner than he expected and began to roll, throwing him down on the lower side. He tried to get out of the way of the log but it rolled upon his arm and breast and held him fast, where he lay in the mud and snow, in his shirt sleeves, for five and a half hours, when he was found and rescued by Clarence Reed, who went to hunt him, when he failed to come home. He escaped serious injury and appears as ever, with the exception of his arm which he has not yet regained the use of."

2 Feb "If the cowardly cur, who has been tucking anonymous notes under my office door and putting anonymous letters in the post office for me and another will have the guts to show his face and swear out a complaint as to what he claims to know he will find me ready to do my 'sworn' duty, especially if that duty requires me to pound his cowardly head with a wet elm club. Of course the women he refers to are 'cute.' They are cute enough to work hard, stay at home and mind their own business, and they can 'get by with it.' Neither the Police Judge, Mayor nor members of the Council has any more power to arrest a violator of the law than has the louse whelp that is too cowardly to sign his name to the dirty notes he is sticking under peoples doors. G. R. O'Brien. Police Judge.

14 Jun POMONA TO HAVE GAS "Last Thursday night at a regular meeting of the city council a franchise was granted the United Gas Service Company to lay gas mains in the city for the purpose of furnishing the residents of Pomona with natural gas. The gas will be obtained by building a pipe line and connecting with the new Cities Service Companies line being built from Wichita to Ottawa, which will be about five miles south of Pomona. The right of way for the pipe line to Pomona has been purchased and we are assured that work on the line will begin soon.

The ordinance granting the franchise is published in another part of this issue of the Republican. It provides for installation of pipe lines and customer service. The franchise is granted for a period of 20 years, and is subject to approval of the Kansas Public Service Commission.

Rates established are: 90 cents per thousand for the first thousand cubic feet; 80 cents a thousand for the next 7,000 cubic feet; 60 cents a thousand for the next 42,000 cubic feet, and 50 cents a thousand for the next 100,000 cubic feet."

26 Jul THE PICNIC "The Odd Fellows annual picnic last Thursday and Friday was a grand success in every way and far surpassed anything ever held here. The weather was Ideal picnic weather both days and there was a large crowd in attendance both day and night. On Thursday the Quenemo band of thirty pieces gave two fine concerts, and the crowd appeared to be well pleased with the negro minstrels. The Quenemo band is a fine band and gave a number of good selections. Ye Mayor and his wife both won first prizes in the contest the first day; the Mayor in the mens' dress-up race and his wife in the womens sawing contest. The evening program was one of best ever given in Pomona. It consisted of concerts given by the Quenemo Band and the Ottawa High School Orchestra of ninety people, and a drill by the Pomona Odd Fellows Degree team. The Ottawa high school orchestra, is wonderful organization of young musicians and the director, Prof. Peacock, is a wonderful man. The second days programs were also well rendered. The Overbrook mens Octett gave a fine vocal concert and the lady readers were good. About a dozen babies were entered in the baby show. The first prize was awarded to Bobby, 7 months old son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Richardson, second to Jack Henry, 7 months old son of Mr and Mrs Oscar Marconett. There were five entries in the "old fiddlers" contest. The first prize was given to uncle Billy Pyle of quenemo, second to Ed Price of Michigan Valley. The evening program was a splendid concert by the Ottawa Boys Band, acrobatic dancing by little Miss Clover of Hoisington and a drill by the Pomona Rebekahs. It is estimated that there were at least 8000 people on the ground Friday night and the best of order both days, no accidents or disturbance of any kind."
